Mission Statement

My mission is to use my extensive graduate education and training, my mental health counseling experience  and my broad spectrum of job/life experience to provide support, healing and solutions.

I believe in strength based therapy that is solution focused.  I have experience working with adults, adolescents and children.  I am licensed to diagnose from the DSM 5.

Change your thoughts and change your emotions.  I can help you learn cognitive behavior techniques to reframe negative thoughts into positive ones through thoughtful reflection and openness.  Using tools such as CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy), DBT (dialectic behavioral therapy), ACT (acceptance and commitment therapy), Family Systems therapy and Logotherapy (finding meaning in your life) we can work toward achieving a life that has meaning and purpose.   Psychoeducation will be used to learn skills to overcome depression/anxiety/relationship issues/communication issues/education issues/career issues/grief and loss.

I have experience in school and parenting issues, family and couple problems, addiction, rape counseling, hospice counseling, spiritual/faith-based treatment, and coping with pain and serious illness. I have worked at mental health agencies, addiction rehabilitation centers, hospitals, residential child care facilities, universities, and the financial industry. I have extensive experience that allows me to serve and relate to a wide variety of clients.  I have lived both in Chicago and in the western suburbs of Chicago with connections to the city for over 3 decades, raising 4 children and gaining counseling experience in urban and suburban settings.  Allow me to listen to your experiences and work with you to improve your mental health while I share my training with you to develop your ability to cope with the demands of everyday life. Let my dedicated service to you be the cornerstone for your mental health.

About me

About me

My name is Joan Fefferman, and I help people overcome their emotional challenges and learn to thrive in the face of adversity.  I work with individuals, families, couples, or groups.

As a licensed clinical professional counselor (LCPC), I am trained to help people learn strategies to be mentally strong and lead healthy lives.  As a certified alcohol and drug addictions counselor (CADC) I have extensive training and experience in medically assisted treatment and abstinence based treatment for addictions.  As a licensed, experienced teacher with graduate degrees, I can help you or your child succeed in high school or college, especially in the STEM fields (that is, science, technology, engineering and ESPECIALLY mathematics, through my training).

When I taught at the high school level, I noticed that students who were emotionally stable and experiencing happiness in their families and relationships were the ones who were able to succeed.  Life’s success is dependent on emotional and mental health.  A correlation clearly exists between successful relationships and the ability to be resilient, emotionally supported, and understood. Direction, spirituality and hope coupled with psychological tools will help you create stability and develop new skills. These skills will help you to be successful in your career, schooling, and in your life.

When I suffered from a life threatening medical misdiagnosis and later a cancer diagnosis, all the while experiencing loss and grief, the drive to pursue a life of giving back allowed me to find meaning.  By focusing on creating meaning in my own life and helping others, I found hope for my own situation and a way to use my experiences to support others.

Raising four children and being married for three decades has been difficult and rewarding.  Allow me to share my experience and advanced training with you to develop your relationships and communication skills.
